Pond construction step 1/7:

Digging the hole

After determining the location and the size of your pond, you can design the shape on the ground using a hose pipe or rope.

  • When you start digging, don’t just dig a big hole with steep sides – divide the surface area to create different depths. Gently slope the walls to create a shallow area where most of the plants will be planted.
  • The planted area should be up to 20 cm deep and account for approximately  40 % of the surface of the pond. The shallow water section is next and should be about 50cm deep, comprising of approximately one third of the pond surface with the remaining quarter at least 80 cm deep, but if possible, 1 - 1.5 m.
  • Should you plan to use a pond liner, we would recommend digging 20 cm deeper than the planned depth to allow for the sand and fleece under the liner and the aquatic soil and sand on top.
