Planting the pond, step 1/2

Potting plants

  • The easiest way is to submerge your new plant into your pond, in a basket.
  • Choose a plant basket that is slightly larger than the basket the plant came in, fill with aquatic soil or mineral substrate (you can buy this ready mixed), make a hole in the substrate and insert the plant.
Please note that nutrient rich compost, peat or topsoil are not suitable for ponds.
  • Press the soil down around the plant and place a thin layer of coarse sand or pebbles on top to prevent the soil being washed away by the current.

Pot the plants next to the pond as the planted baskets can be extremely heavy - especially if you have chosen large plants.
