Pond protection 1/3:

Protection against herons

In spring, the grey heron likes to visit garden ponds in its search for food and, if you keep koi, a raid from a heron can potentially be a painful loss. Some simple measures can be taken to deter the heron from raiding your pond:

  • The simplest method is to position a fake heron by your pond, as herons are solitary feeders and will usually avoid another heron’s territory.
  • Another simple method is to place shiny or mirrored balls in the pond as the reflection keeps the herons away.
  • You can also use a heron scarer, a device that releases a jet of water when the raiding heron triggers a motion sensor.
  • Please note: the grey heron has been under species protection since the 1970s.
